Our SPCA is the 3rd oldest in Portugal and we are associated to the RSPCA. Our Society was founded in 1897 by João de Bettencourt Jardim. We are a private institution and have been declared a public utility service, with our main objective being the direct protection of animals in general, and particularly the protection of abandoned animals.
We have a veterinary clinic, lodging and grooming facilities, a shop and a cattery.
Visiting hours for field trips and adoption is from 11h00 to 12h30 / 14h00 to 17h00 (until 19h00 for adoption) from Monday to Friday and on Saturdays from 11h00 to 13h00.
We manage to take in about 3500 cats and dogs per year of which about 30% are reintegrated (adopted). We do not collect strays due to lack of lodging space. All animals in our shelter are fed with dry pellets.
We have capacity for 150 strays in the municipal kennel which is under our management by means of a protocol with the municipality of Funchal.
Although we are opposed to euthanasia of healthy animals in good physical form, we understand that it might be necessary in circumstances such as contagious diseases, incurable diseases and accidents that surpass our budget. We furthermore endeavour not to keep any animal caged in for more than 1 year.
We have about 3500 paying members.
Our main sources of income are our veterinary clinic, membership fees and donations, and the monthly subsidies from the municipality.
Please help us with our mission:
“TO PREVENT CRUELTY AND ENSURE ANIMAL WELL BEING.”
